You know when you have really made an impact in the world? NO, its not by the money that is thrown at your feet, its when the world creates money with your face on it in appreciation. South Africa has just released bank notes with the face of former South African president and political prisoner, Nelson Mandela. (You can check out the animation of the banknotes HERE.)
What a fitting tribute to a man was tried for treason for adopting the Freedom Charter, and then incarcerated for 27 years for leading non-violent resistance and sabotage all in the name of ending apartheid. When released from prison he dedicated himself to peace and reconciliation with the country’s white minority and lead negotiations for the country’s first multi-racial democratic election. It was in 1994 that he was elected president of South Africa and during his presidency he facilitated lots of social reforms. After his retirement from the presidency, he became an advocate for human rights and social justice. At the age of 94, Mandela hasn’t stopped. He is now working to educate and help end the Aids Crisis.
Although his contribution in life has been priceless, its pretty amazing that the nation will be reminded every time they hold money, just what contribution Mandela has made and just what “contributing” is all about.
